One of the main reasons people reach out to me about CBD products is because they need help with relaxation and sleep. It’s clear that interest in using CBD as a natural sleep aid is growing. But can CBD actually help you fall asleep faster and keep you asleep? Both interesting questions because some people would say that at higher doses, CBD can be sedating, while others say it can be invigorating and energizing. Let’s dive in and take a look at this new alternative sleep aid.
CBD is very subjective, so there’s no set “good time” to take it for therapeutic benefit. Some people love to take CBD in the morning, while others like to use it throughout the day or specifically at night to help them relax and unwind. Cannabidiol is definitely not classified as a nighttime sleep aid like melatonin would be due to it’s highly sedating effects, but rather it’s used to enhance whatever mode you’re currently in, or looking to get to. As a daily user of CBD, I can honestly say that CBD doesn’t necessarily make you feel super drowsy and ready for bed, it simply relaxes me to the point that I can fall asleep quicker, and actually stay asleep longer. What I love about using CBD for sleep, is that it helps to drown out the “chatter” inside of my head that seems to be the thief of good sleep, and lays it to rest, so that I too can achieve a deeper more restful sleep.
Another reason why I like the possibility of using CBD for sleep, is because CBD may also help to lessen pain, allowing people like myself with chronic fibromyalgia pain and the associated anxiety, to achieve a feeling of peace and calm, a state of mind that is usually missing when you suffer from chronic pain and inflammation. My thought is this, if you can lessen the pain, then the secondary effect of this could be that your body may actually relax enough to fall asleep. Could it just be that this is an indirect way of helping people fall asleep? Quite possibly. But I’ll take it, good sleep is hard to come by with the intensity of our modern day world. As a nurse with plenty of experience with prescription sleep aids, I’d like to think that because CBD causes a calm peaceful feeling, that this could be the reason why it’s so easy to fall asleep after a small dose of CBD oil in the evening.
Why is CBD gaining ground as a Natural sleep aid?
Let’s face it, we live in a society where stress and anxiety are king. From the daily demands placed on all of us with family, work, and other priorities, it’s easy to feel the heat and suffer the consequences when we finally lay down for some shut eye. And not to mention the fact that the pain associated with chronic illness can be a major culprit as well. Deadlines + Demands = No Sleep. Based on the thousands of people that I’ve spoken with about the inability to fall asleep and stay asleep, I’d have to be honest and say that the reason why I think CBD is so popular for sleep is because people want natural choices vs. chemically induced sleep, and want to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to face their day instead of feeling groggy and half asleep for most the day, which is a well known side effect of prescription sleep aides. And CBD is the perfect fit because it creates a sense of calm and relaxation, which could quite possibly lead to better overall sleep. People are seeking natural alternatives and CBD may just be what people are looking for.
Is CBD oil invigorating?
Not necessarily. The benefits and responses to CBD use are subjective and very individualized, you could equate it to trying to attain your perfect dosing or “sweet spot”, meaning that what one person experiences from the same dosage, other people may not. Some people may feel completely relaxed from a nightly dose of CBD, while others may feel energized. The best remedy for this is to tweak your daily dosing until you discover your perfect dose, or what works best for you. Micro-dosing CBD at night could help to alleviate symptoms of excitement, while leaving your larger daily dose of CBD for daytime hours, this is done to alleviate a sense of alertness and allows the body to relax as the day goes on, helping to achieve relative calm by the time you slip into bed for a good nights sleep.
Even though CBD oil for sleep isn’t widely studied, it is definitely widely accepted and people truly want more answers. They want relief. They want to sleep peacefully and wake up ready to go. Todays hectic pace requires it. People are ready to try something new with less side effects than prescription sleep aids, they want a safer natural product, and they want less post-sleep side effects like grogginess, and the ability to wake up and go.
